When is the Best Time to Schedule Family Photography Session?
Drum roll please……anytime is the best time to schedule your family photography session! There is no right or wrong time of year, season of life, or milestone needed. Your family is valuable and your role as a mother is valuable. There are no parameters to documenting your family and your season of motherhood.
Why Winter works for Family Photography
Many families have made the tradition of updating family photos in the fall. That’s great, however just because it’s not fall, doesn’t mean you can’t get family pictures take. One little secret in home photographers know is winter time is a great time for indoor family pictures. Why? The mid morning light is gorgeous. Also, there are no leaves on the trees filtering the sunlight. That means if you aren’t sure about the amount of natural light in your home, winter will maximize your natural light!
Is your family saying goodbye to a home or are you moving into a new home? Either of these situations would be a great opportunity to document. Documenting your children’s home and having special photographs to remember where their memories were made is wonderful.
Welcoming a New Baby or even a Pet?
Of course an obvious reason to capture family photographs is to celebrate a new baby, but what about a new pet? Personally, when we got both of our dogs, the amount of pictures we took of them and our kids together was crazy. What’s even more crazy, is anytime we have added to our backyard chicken flock, I have taken hundreds of photos of my girls with the chicks, because who doesn’t love baby chicks?
A Time of Transition
Is the youngest the last to transition out of the crib, or is your youngest starting “big kid” school? These are seasons to be celebrated and what better way than to document what was happening with your family than with a family photography session. For me, we have had pictures taken by a professional photography 4 times, and each time without realizing it, we were beginning or ending a season in our family. The last time all my girls were “little kids,” last time we had just two kids before our third, and the last time we went to the beach before our oldest decides about college.
Of course being a family photographer, I am trying to persuade you to invest in your own family’s photographs, but here’s the deal. All of the images I have of my childhood are gold for my kids. It is their heritage, it is their history. I have very few family photographs of my parents when they were younger and I would leap through flames to retrieve them. Your photographs will be gold to your children years from now. Not because they enjoy looking back at themselves, but looking back at you and how you evolved as a mother. It doesn’t matter if you are experiencing a hard season, or your house isn’t they way you want it because looking back the images will bring you joy. Perfection will not be remember but the connections, memories, and their home will be.
