There are very, very few reasons I would hesitate in scheduling a newborn photography session. For example, if your health or your baby’s health was compromised after your delivery. You might want to wait a little longer to schedule your photography session. If you mentally need more time to adjust with a new baby at home, I would hesitate in scheduling in your newborn session. However, if you are hesitating to schedule a newborn session because you think your home is not ‘good enough?’

Well then, I am here to convince otherwise!

An In-Home Newborn Photography Session is More about the newborn and not the home!

In-home newborn photography is more about your newborn and less about your home. I am not an interior design photographer. I am not coming to your house to capture the latest trends and color schemes of your home. My only focus is to document your family engaging with each other while telling your story of what it is like to have a newborn.

Looking for the Light

While I am planning for moments to capture you, your newborn, and your family, my main concern is light. I am always looking for the best natural light filled areas. The amount of natural light in areas of your home is the biggest determinate of where we will have your session.

Once the lighting is determined, then I will step back and look for anything that looks cluttered or distracting from your photographs. For example, extra throw pillows, brightly colored blankets, plastic baby items (wipe containers, diaper bins, baby gyms etc.), and extra boxes. Most often, we will be able to prepare for these distractions in your client pre-session or make a quick move of things during your session.

Looking for You!

Finally, my camera is focused on you, your children’s faces, and points of connection with your family. I love to celebrate families by intentionally shooting close up images so can have photographs that showcase your children’s little details. I do step back to allow more of a room to be show, if it helps tell the story of your photograph. However, my true point of focus is you!

Newborn photography sessions are one of the most important ways to document your baby and family. As you know, newborns change, grow and develop so incredibly fast. Do not let worry about the design elements of your home keep you from capturing these incredibly important moments. Newborn photography sessions are about photographing your family in light-filled areas in your home, it’s as simple as that!
