Hiring a newborn photographer for the first time can be a confusing. For instance, there are so many different photography styles and genres, how will you know what type is best for you? There are several questions you should ask your potential newborn photographer. I have created my top five questions to ask your potential newborn photographer to see if they are the right fit for you!

Question 1: When do you prefer to schedule newborn photos?

Many newborn photographers have a very defined opinion about how old your newborn should be for family pictures. Some like to schedule photographs within the first two weeks, others prefer later. I like to schedule newborn photography sessions when the baby is 6 to 8 weeks old. I have noticed that the family seems more relaxed after having more time to get to know their little one. Also, I enjoy when newborns are slightly awake for part of their photography session. I love to capture moments when baby is looking at their family.

Question 2: Do you use props in your newborn photography sessions?

You might have noticed while searching for newborn photographers, some like to use props. Props can be swaddles, baskets, and other items that the photographer uses to place your baby in. I prefer a more authentic way to capture your newborn. You and your family can expect to be holding your baby the majority of the time. I want to capture your little one’s size in relation to your arms and hands. I want to see the joy in your eyes as you hold your newborn. I will also have time for your baby to be captured in their crib. I believe in capturing your baby the most authentic way possible.

Question 3: Where do you conduct your newborn sessions?

Location is important to consider when looking for a newborn photographer. Some photographers work from a studio, some work only outdoors, and some work in client’s homes. I prefer to work in clients homes. If we come to the realization that your home doesn’t have the best natural light, or your home is under construction, I have access to a great indoor studio

Question 4: Do you have experience photographing newborns?

There are so many different types of photography. It’s important to ask if your photographer has experience capturing newborns. You want to feel comfortable during your photography session and know the photographer is capturing not just your newborn but how you interact with each other and being careful around your baby and small children.

Question 5: What does your session price include?

Newborn photography session items are very particular to your individual photographer. For instance, some photographers have packages that you choose from. Some photographers allow clients to pick so many digital images and print products. Session guides, wardrobe guides, pre-session calls, time shooting, and print products can be just a few of the choices available to you. Currently, my session includes a session prep guide, a pre-session phone call, wardrobe guidance, your session time (60-80 minutes), all edited digital images, and the option to purchase print products from my print shop. Determining your needs is really the best way to decide what type of session and post session experience you need.

Deciding on your newborn photographer is an exciting and at times overwhelming experience. However, when you break down your decision and focus on the style, details, and wants you value, finding and hiring your newborn photographer is easier than you ever expected.
