In-home lifestyle newborn photography creates a link between capturing the  story of your family and the location of where many of your most important memories are made.  You and your family are the main characters in this story. I would even like to say, mom you are the heroine in the story!  Even though your home does not play a huge role in your session, it is important to take a little bit of time to elevate your home for your family photo session.

I hear you! You already have to schedule the photo session, find and coordinate outfits, get everyone ready, and now add a little ‘pizzaz’ to your home sounds like a lot. However, it’s really simple and you probably already do it anyway!

Step #1 Let’s tidy before your newborn session

Tidy up the areas of your home that we decided to use from your pre-session phone call. What exactly does tidy-up mean? Envision your house keeper is coming over to clean. You need to put away all the toys, shoes, laundry, plastic wear, papers, etc. where they belong so the cleaners have easy access to your surfaces and floors. When looking in an area, you only want to see what really makes you happy and makes the space feel relaxed.

Step 2. Celebrate your newborn photo session with Flowers

Welcoming a new baby is celebration! Including fresh flowers in your home is a wonderful way to elevate your home. I love when clients have a bouquet of fresh flowers in their child’s nursery or the living area of their homes. It adds a great detail and pop of color to your images. If you chose to have fresh flowers, I will find some way to incorporate them into your images!

Step 3 Play Music!

How many of you or your spouse have a favorite playlist or a playlist your family enjoys together? I love when families utilize music during their photography session. There have been so many times I have heard Disney classics played during sessions for little to dance to. Quiet classical music is nice and ending with a few upbeat tunes is great too. Music adds that layer of fun, makes everyone (even me) more relaxed for your in home lifestyle newborn photography session. If your family is accustomed to hearing music in the home, then let’s hear your tunes!

Step 4 Remove One Thing

A quote made famous by Coco Chanel, “before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” With your home, specifically the areas we will be using, take a look around and if there is one thing that is really distracting, just remove it for your session. I want your homes to be the backdrop of your story. If there is something in the room that sticks out, just remove it for the day. This could be your child’s train table, a large brightly colored bean-bag poof, multiple coffee table books, a throw blanket with a large pattern, etc. This step will give your room a more cohesive, stream lined look.

  1. […] First, let’s set the stage for your in-home newborn session. My clients are well aware of what ares in your home we will most likely use for your in-home photo session. Before your session, take a few minutes and do a ‘sweep’ of the area. Remove excess clutter and things that are not exactly picture perfect. Then, set the stage! You can incorporate fresh flowers, open your window treatments, and plan for music to play during your session. By doing theses simple tasks ahead of time, you have created a comfortable and relaxed environment. Thus, allowing you to simply focus on your family and minimize any distractions.
