The importance of family photos should never be discounted. Actual research suggests the value of family photographs at times of crisis. I argue that they are especially important because, the roles of moms are celebrated and documented in your family photos. You might think this is a very obvious statement, but the majority of photos taken by families, mom is the photographer. Moms are aware of how quickly time passes and often the ones choosing to take pictures of their children. Of course, these photos are valuable but documenting family moments with everyone included, especially moms is the most important aspect of a family photography session.
Moms are a Vital Part of your Family Story
First of all, I am not downgrading the roles of spouses or the importances of capturing your children, but moms play a central role in their family story. When I am working photographing a Fort Worth family, my goal is to highlight the importance of the role mom plays in creating family memories. I want to see how her children look at her. It is so important to see how everyone lights up when mom is engaged in the moment instead of behind the camera.
Memories will Fade, but your Photos will Last
Again, not to sound like captain obvious, but your memory will fade. You might be in the deep depths of motherhood right now, but this stage does not last forever. Trust me. I have looked back over photos of my own children and in doing so memories that I had forgotten, become alive again. It is such a treat as a family to reminisce over our family photographs. Family portraits provide a lasting legacy of your family’s story. From the holiday traditions to kids sitting in their favorite PJ’ at the breakfast table. Every piece is important and should be celebrated.
Moms Deserve to be Celebrated
Speaking of celebrated, moms deserve to be celebrated. So often moms shift the spotlight to their children or spouse, especially when taking pictures. Do not limit yourself to behind the camera. Mom ,must take part in their family’s photographs. You are an essential piece to your family’s history. Your children will want to see you in photographs in years to come.
Do not discount your visibility in family photographs because you might be insecure about how you look in photographs. First of all, if you have any doubts about what to wear for your session or what looks flattering on you, I am here to help! I have photographed many, many Fort Worth families and I have extensive experience with helping moms create family outfits based on what they feel great wearing. More importantly, your children think you are beautiful. They re not going to criticize you for those little imperfections we all have. Relax, this is for your children. They want to see YOU in the photograph, being a certain size or having the perfect look is not the important factor for them. Being you is what they want.
Importance of Leaving Legacy for your Children
Finally, the goal of documenting your family isn’t for the holiday card or prints for grandparent gifts. The real reason for documenting your family in beautiful photographs is so your children can look back on their photos of their mom. Think about you now as an adult. I have a feeling the photographs you have of you and your mom together are pretty darn valuable. These photographs will become artifacts of your children’s childhood. Your photographs will remind them forever of their mother’s presence.
Realizing the importance of family photos is a gift to your family. It is vitally important for moms to have an active role in their family’s photographs. It is vitally important for moms to be part of both everyday and special moments captured in photographs. I invite you to schedule a lifestyle photography session where everyone, even YOU is included in the memories.
