If you’re pregnant and starting to think about booking a maternity session, you probably have a list of questions running through your head. How long does it take? What should I wear? Is it weird to be photographed when I’m this big and swollen and tired? I get it, and I’m here to walk you through it all.
As a DFW maternity photographer, I’ve had the honor of photographing dozens of growing families during one of the most tender, fleeting chapters of their lives. Below, I’m answering the questions I hear most often, so you can walk into your session feeling prepared, confident, and excited instead of nervous.

How Long Does a DFW Maternity Session Last?
As a DFW maternity photographer, most of my maternity sessions last about 35 to 40 minutes. That might sound short, but pregnancy at this stage comes with its own timeline. You’re tired, your feet might be swollen, and standing for long stretches isn’t exactly comfortable. I keep sessions efficient and focused so we capture beautiful, varied images without wearing you out. We move through a handful of locations and poses, and before you know it, we’re done and you’re headed home to put your feet up.
Why Should I Even Bother With Maternity Photos?

Here’s something a little personal: I never had maternity photos taken of me, and it’s one of my biggest regrets. I never felt comfortable in front of the camera at that stage of pregnancy. I’m a nester and a planner by nature, and honestly, I had a difficult time getting pregnant in the first place. There was always this quiet fear in the back of my mind that if I celebrated too much, something might go wrong.
Looking back now, I wish I had let myself celebrate that moment instead of shrinking away from it. Pregnancy is so life-changing, so fleeting, and so deeply special, and I wish I had documented it instead of just hoping to remember it. That regret is part of why I do this work now. I want every mama I photograph to have what I didn’t: real, tangible images of herself at her most powerful and transformative season of life. As a DFW maternity photographer, I just want you to consider documenting this time for your future self and your family’s story.
If you’re on the fence about booking a session because you don’t feel “photo ready,” please know that almost every mom feels that way walking in. And almost every mom leaves in tears (the good kind) when she sees her gallery.
Do DFW Maternity Sessions Have to Be Outdoors?
Most of my maternity sessions take place outdoors, and there’s a reason for that. Natural light is soft, golden, and incredibly flattering on a pregnant belly, and Fort Worth has no shortage of gorgeous open fields, tree-lined paths, and golden-hour backdrops that make for timeless images.
That said, outdoor isn’t the only option. I recently photographed an in-home maternity session for a mom with older children, and it was an absolute delight. We did a donuts-and-pajamas theme, and the whole thing was relaxed, meaningful, and so much fun. There was something so sweet about capturing the anticipation of a new sibling alongside the simple joy of sharing a treat with mom in their own cozy space. If an at-home session feels more “you,” especially if you have other little ones who’d rather be comfortable in their own house than out in a field, that’s absolutely something we can plan together. As your DFW maternity photographer we can plan together the best location for your family.
What if I’m Not Comfortable in Front of the Camera?

This is probably the question I get asked the most, and I want to put your mind at ease. You don’t have to know how to pose. You don’t have to feel confident walking in. As your DFW maternity photographer, that’s what I’m here for.
A maternity session gives you the rare chance to be in front of the camera with someone who knows how to make you look and feel your best. I pay close attention to light, angles, and the small, fleeting moments, the way you cradle your belly, the way your partner’s hand rests beside yours, the quiet smile you didn’t know you were making, so that you walk away with images that actually feel like you. My goal isn’t to make you pose like a magazine cover. It’s to help you remember exactly how this season felt.
If aches, pelvic pain, or general discomfort are making it hard to feel like yourself this trimester, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to just push through it. The team at Genesis PT & Wellness has several DFW locations, including one right here in Fort Worth, and specializes in helping pregnant women prepare their bodies for labor and delivery through prenatal physical therapy, birth prep classes, and doula support. A lot of my clients find that getting some relief beforehand makes the whole maternity session, and the rest of the third trimester, that much more enjoyable.
When Should I Schedule My Maternity Session?
Timing matters more than people realize. In my experience as a DFW maternity photographer, I recommend scheduling your maternity session at the beginning of your third trimester, typically between 28 and 32 weeks. At this point, your bump is beautifully on display, but you’re still comfortable enough to move around, stand for short stretches, and enjoy the experience without feeling completely exhausted. Wait too much longer, and swelling, discomfort, or an early arrival can throw off your plans. Booking early in the third trimester gives us a nice buffer of flexibility too, in case we need to reschedule due to weather or how you’re feeling that week.
What Should I Wear?

While this wasn’t on your original list, it’s one of the most common follow-up questions, so I’ll touch on it briefly. Flowy dresses in solid, muted colors tend to photograph beautifully outdoors, especially in soft neutrals, blush tones, sage greens, or deep jewel tones depending on the season. I’m always happy to send a full styling guide once your session is booked so you’re not stressed about what to wear the morning of.
How Many Images Will I Receive?
Every maternity session includes a full gallery of over 30 professionally edited images. That’s plenty of variety, close-up belly shots, full-length portraits, candid laughing moments, and tender details, so you have a complete visual story of this chapter, not just a handful of similar-looking photos.
Final Thoughts
Pregnancy is fleeting in the best and most bittersweet way. The bump you have today will be gone in a matter of weeks, replaced by the chaos and joy of a newborn. A maternity session is your chance to pause, celebrate, and document a version of yourself you’ll only get to be once with this particular baby.
If you’re based in the Fort Worth area and you’re ready to celebrate this season instead of letting it slip by undocumented like I did, I’d love to chat. Reach out and let’s talk about what kind of session, outdoor and golden-hour, or cozy and in-home, feels right for you and your growing family.
