Fall family photo outfit ideas do not have to be a source of stress! Coordinating your family’s outfits can be relatively simple and if you just take a little time to plan. It’s really not that bad if you follow a little formula.

Years ago there was a television show on called “What Not to Wear”. I was a total fan of the makeover show that taught consumers a trick for creating an outfit formula…color, pattern, texture, and shine. Once I began helping moms plan for their family’s outfits for their newborn and family photograph sessions, those four words kept coming back to mind.

Are there things to stay away from when planning outfits? Yes, large logos, neon colors, and limit the use of black. I know lots of people prefer black, but it can drain the color from faces and highlight the darker areas under your eyes.

Of course the TV show used all of the characteristics of color pattern, texture, and shine to create a single outfit. I like to use them to create an outfit for your whole family. Fall family photo outfits are a great time to try this technique. While planning, look at everyones clothes as a whole…is there a combination of color, pattern, texture, and shine?

Break down the outfit formula…

Here is how this works. Look at the collage below. The mom’s outfit has the pattern. The young daughter’s outfit has the texture and shine, and we bring in color with dad and the young son.  Easy, peasy!

Take a look at the next collage. It is much more subtle but you still have elements of pattern, texture, color, and shine could be a great pair of gold hoops, a glitter like headband, or a stack of bracelets.

You can use this simple rule of thumb for newborn pictures or family pictures. As long as you are wearing what makes YOU happy and your family comfortable, it will be ok.
