One of my most asked questions for clients preparing for a family photo session, is what will we do during a newborn session? Anytime I am working with children, there is a given fact that anything and everything could happen. However, I do have a structure to my newborn sessions that will allow you to feel prepared for what is to come next. I like to think of it as telling a story, you have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

The Beginning of your Family Photo Session

When I arrive at your home, I will greet your children and your husband. In many instances, mom is the last one to get ready for the family photo session, or she is settling the baby. No problem! I will introduce myself to your spouse and children. If your children are old enough, I will ask them to give me a tour of your home. During this time, I will find a place to stash my belongings in an area that we will not be using.

Next, if your baby is not dressed yet, I might ask to take a few intimate snuggle shots of you holding your baby while they are wearing their diaper. I love capturing the tiny little details of their wrinkly back and fuzzy head of hair during this time. Next, I will take a few pictures of you all while you dress your baby.

The Middle of your Session

During the next 50 minutes, I will guide you through very relaxed poses. My poses are not meant to be stiff or uncomfortable. It’s more about engaging with your family in the setting that has the most flattering light. Not everyone in your family will be in every image. We will take turns rotating which parent holds the newborn, having the siblings interact with the baby, pictures of mom and dad with baby, and finally a few images of just the newborn.  During this time, if your baby needs to be fed, changed, or if older kids need a break, there is time allowed for this. My family sessions are always based and led by your children.

The End

This is the hardest part for me! You will notice that I never put my camera away until I am out the door. I am always thinking and looking for the next great photograph. However, once I feel that I have more than enough images, I ALWAYS ask the parents, is there anything else you want to include?  Once we have a minute to brainstorm any last images, I gather my things, and say my farewells. I will remind you that your gallery will be ready in 2-3 weeks. 

Having a beginning, middle, an end are helpful framework for creating a beautiful story. This story happens to be about you and your family and I am so thankful to hep you document your family’s story.
