Mini Session vs. Full Session: Which Family Photography Session Is Right for You?
If you’ve ever browsed a photographer’s website or scrolled through Instagram looking for family photo inspiration, chances are you’ve seen the terms “mini session” and “full session” pop up more than once. While these may sound self-explanatory to seasoned photo clients, they can feel like photography lingo for everyone else.
As a Fort Worth family photographer, I often get asked: What’s the difference between a mini session and a full session? And more importantly, which one is right for my family?
Let’s dive into the details so you feel confident choosing the session that fits your season of life—whether you’re wrangling toddlers, prepping for holiday cards, or just overdue for an updated family photo with mom actually in it!
What Is a Full Family Photography Session?
A full family photography session is like a feature-length film: it captures the whole story. These sessions typically last between 50–80 minutes, giving your family space to relax, connect, and simply be together in front of the camera.
With a full session, we aren’t watching the clock. There’s time for kids to warm up, time for outfit fixes, snack breaks, or even an impromptu piggyback ride or tickle fight. The goal? A session that unfolds naturally so the resulting images reflect who your family truly is in this season.
Here’s what you can expect from a full family session with me at Allison Krogness Photography:
✅ More Time = More Photos
Because the session runs longer, you’ll receive a more robust gallery—usually between 80 to 100 images. That includes a variety of:
- Full family portraits
- Sibling shots
- Individual photos of your children
- Candid lifestyle moments (think snuggles, walks, and giggles)
- Parent-only shots (you deserve a good photo together, too!)
And we’ll have plenty of time to try multiple “poses” or just follow your children’s lead if they’re feeling playful or shy.
✅ Flexibility With Location
One of the perks of booking a full session is having choice over your session location. We can shoot in the comfort of your home, a local studio like The Lumen Room, or any number of outdoor favorites around Fort Worth. Some of my go-to full session spots include:
- The Fort Worth Botanic Gardens for dreamy greenery
- The Kimbell Art Museum grounds for clean, modern architecture
- Open fields at golden hour for that soft, glowing light
- Your front porch or backyard for a truly personal touch
We’ll talk through your family’s personality and style to choose the perfect location that reflects you.
✅ Styling Support Is Included
Worried about what to wear? With full sessions, you’ll have the option to receive custom styling guidance. I can create outfit inspiration boards using items you already own—or send links to curated, photo-friendly pieces from some of my favorite Fort Worth shops (think Hale House, Milk & Honey Boutique, or Lila + Hayes for the kids).
My goal is to take the guesswork out of it so you show up feeling confident and coordinated—without being matchy-matchy.
What Is a Family Mini Session?
If a full session is a feature film, think of a mini session as the highlight reel. Mini sessions are short, sweet, and to the point. They last around 20–25 minutes and are ideal for families who just want a few updated photos without committing to a full hour.
These sessions are pre-scheduled and held at set times and locations chosen by the photographer. For example, this fall, I’m offering mini sessions at:
- The Lumen Room – Fort Worth (studio setting with natural light)
- A beautiful open field at sunset
- Vibrant Magnolia Avenue for an urban backdrop
- The clean architecture of the Kimbell Art Museum grounds
✅ Mini Sessions Are Quick and Convenient
For families with younger kids (or reluctant dads!), mini sessions are often a great fit. They move fast, and since I’ve done a lot of these over the years, I work efficiently to grab a handful of gorgeous, high-impact shots in just a few minutes.
Think of it like a well-planned sprint instead of a leisurely stroll.
✅ Budget-Friendly Option
Because of the shorter session time and limited number of images, mini sessions are more affordable than full family sessions. They’re perfect if you’re:
- Updating your family photo for holiday cards
- Needing a few new prints for your gallery wall
- Just wanting a low-key refresh of your family portraits
✅ Limited But Beautiful Variety
Mini session galleries usually contain around 15–18 edited images. While there’s not as much variety as a full session, you’ll still get a mix of family groupings, a couple of individual shots, and some candid moments—enough to tell a sweet snapshot of your family right now.
Because time is limited, we won’t be able to change outfits or move between locations. So come ready, and we’ll make the most of every minute!
So, Mini Session or Full Session—Which Is Right for You?
There’s no wrong choice here—just the one that best fits your family’s needs, your calendar, and what you hope to get out of the experience.
Here’s a quick comparison to help you decide:
Feature | Full Session | Mini Session |
---|---|---|
Length of session | 50–80 minutes | 20–25 minutes |
Number of images | 80–100 | 15–18 |
Location flexibility | You choose | Photographer chooses |
Outfit changes allowed | Yes (1–2) | No |
Styling support | Included | Not included |
Ideal for… | Families who want a full story captured | Quick updates, holiday cards, budget-friendly portraits |
When to Book a Full Family Session:
- You haven’t had professional photos taken in a few years
- You want to document your family in a more in-depth, storytelling way
- Your kids are slow to warm up to new people
- You’re celebrating something special (like a birthday, adoption, anniversary, or new home)
- You want variety and flexibility—location, outfits, timing
When a Mini Session Might Be Perfect:
- You want a few high-quality images on a quicker timeline
- You’re on a budget but still want to invest in professional photography
- Your family needs updated photos for holiday cards
- Your kids do best with short attention spans
- You just love the look of a seasonal setup or specific location
Final Thoughts
Whether you choose a full family session or a mini session, you’re making a meaningful investment in your family’s story. Both options have their strengths—and both can result in frame-worthy images you’ll treasure for years.
The good news? You don’t have to choose just one forever. Many of my returning clients alternate between the two depending on the season of life they’re in. A full session one year, a quick mini the next. It’s all about what works best for your family in this moment.
As a Fort Worth family photographer, I’m here to guide you through the process and help you feel calm, confident, and excited—whether we’re spending an hour together in a wildflower field or dashing through a 20-minute mini on Magnolia Avenue.
